Earlier this week I was invited to a dinner at our local Firehouse Subs restaurant to sample some food and meet one of the founders, Robin Sorenson.
Firehouse Subs is the brainchild of brothers Chris and Robin Sorenson. They come from a family of firefighters, and in the early nineties, they merged their love of food with the theme of firefighting and Firehouse Subs was born.
There are two, well, three reasons a Firehouse Subs stop should be on your family fun list this summer.
1.) The Firehouse theme will excite your kids (and maybe your grownups). They give out hats, have fire engine lights on the walls, and the restaurants are filled with fire station themed decor. It’s super fun, and it would be a great lunch stop after a touch-a-truck event.
2.) The food is AMAZING. It’s seriously delicious (even according to Zagat’s). For your less adventerous kids, they do offer a grilled cheese sandwich. But mama can enjoy a New York Steamer, filled with paastrami and corned beef, or any number of other sandwiches. Robin told us the tale of how many of their items are sourced, and quality is their #1 concern. Also, every store has a Coke Freestyle machine, which gives you over 120 ways to make your drink. It’s overwhelming in the fizziest, best way possible.
3) Firehouse Subs gives back. The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation has donated over $5million to public safety intitatives around the country over the years. Local stores encourage patrons to give, the Sorensons encourage their vendors to give, and they themselves donate generously to the causes they so deeply believe in. At our event, we saw photos of rescue boats purchased for the Plainfield Fire department. Robin also told us of relief efforts they were coordinating this week to tornando ravaged Oklahoma.
